This Sunday, cartoon's Network's [adult swim] debuts a new show, Robot Chicken. It's basically stop-motion animation performed with action figures instead of clay. Thanks to a screener copy, here's an advance review:
If the show plays a bit like "Twisted ToyFare Theatre," there's a good reason for that - it's done by Sweet J, the partnership between TV's Seth Green and ToyFare's Tom Root. It's got a very Gen-X sense of humor; probably a little bit younger than Sealab 2021 or Harvey Birdman.
Rather than one long story, the episode is divided into brief skits. This episode, "Junk in the Trunk," includes an anti-drug PSA, a very special episode of Transformers, some "caught on tape" reality tv and many more. The longest segment, all about TV bloopers, runs just four minutes, but it's packed with at least a dozen smaller gags and set-ups.
When the humor works, it really, really works. When it doesn't, it... well, that part lasts about 10 seconds. This is just a damn funny show, and a perfect treat for fans of action figures.
Sunday night, 11:30. Catch it.
I'll definitely try. If it's funny, I will be happy. If it's incoherently obscene, I'll be sad.
I'm looking forward to it. Adult Swim's comedy shows are hit and miss, with the hits still being annoyingly absurd and halfassedly produced. But... action figures, and Seth Green. I expect it to at least be decent. And indecent.
