Rustin's Spoils of the Week #24

Out on the road for another two weeks, these are a mix of the things I could find, needed to buy to stay sane, and were gifted by my Boss when i jokingly asked for Thor and Green Lantern toys. I bid you sweet enjoyment.

Hasbro - Captain America: Captain Britain
Hooboy is this a cool figure. Nice execution and sculpt of a pretty appealing costume but its the metallic paint that really does me in. I held off on getting this for so long because it's nearly impossible to find good paint on the bulk of the Captain America line, but this was good enough. The sword is a pretty cool addition too (forget about the repainted Iron Man cannon). I really like the torso and neck balljoints on this line, which allow for a surprisingly natural looking list for figures hoisting accessories.

Hasbro - G.I. Joe: Cobra Commander
Man... considering how great the rest of this line has been this figure is nearly offensive in its un-cool-ness. The body is the same from the movie and Series 1 Cobra Commander, but with a new jacket piece over the torso and new head. The head is the best part of the figure with the helmet being glued on to the highly silver face mask. This gives it a more "realistic" proportionality and avoids the loose-helmet scourge of previous iterations. The jacket torso is just plain boring. In a line where Firefly has wicked aerial armor and Destro comes in full assault armor, an "adventure jacket" with ascot is really disappointing. It would ruin the figure if the cape weren't so bad. The cloth isn't stellar but its the wide collar on the sculpted jacket and the bulky gold claps that make this thing just look ridiculous. Tons of accessories though, several of which I don't understand and most which can not be held.

Hasbro - Star Wars: Senate Guard
Picked up a second of one the very best figures to come from the Vintage line this year.

Habsro - Thor: Battle Hammer Thor
I only have this "Sir Does-Not-Appear-In-This-Movie" costume because of my boss, and it actually turns out to be a solid figure. As you seen in the photo I was actually able to get him into somewhat more interesting poses than "regular" Thor, and the flowing pelvis ribbons actually add a nice dynamism to the figure. This is totally passable in that its a mediocre costume that's not in the film, but its still a fun toy I don't hate, which is what I expected. I still can't for the life of me understand why this exists and would/is so clearly warm pegs.

Mattel - DC Universe Classics: The Spectre (Variant)
Usually I'm not that into supporting DCUC beyond the bare minimum, but when setting up my figures a few months back I realized I needed a second Spectre so I could have one with my JSA and one with my Paranormals (Deadman, etc.), so this glow-in-the-dark variant had my name all over it. Fairly happy it comes with the right arm of Darkseid so I have a spare mecha glove should the need ever arise to DESTROY LIFE!

Mattel - Green Lantern: Mask & Ring
In all honestly I had been tempted by this from the get go. Sorry, I'm just that kind of nerd. Fortunately my boss is half Betazoid and empathed my desire. Its literally exactly what you would imagine. A flexible but firm/thick mask and re-tool of the ring that comes with the four-inch figures, which of course means its a pink-ring at best. The twist here is it lights up - push the bump in the center of the lantern icon and the glows for two approximately 3 second pulses. TOO FUN!

McFarlane - Halo Reach: UNSC Trooper Support Staff
I am a sucker for Troopers figures and Battle Builders, so here I am making the same mistake as I did with series 1 of the two-packs. Included here are a Medic Trooper and a Radio Trooper, both use the same core body as the previous troopers and the ODSTs, which means they have no bicep articulation which ruins the poseability of the figures. To a most casual fan, such as myself, the variations between the first two pack and this one are very subtle, with the most notable being the new backpacks. Its a shame there weren't more new accessories or more specialized helmets/paint to really help these guys stand out.

Wasn't there a 6-inch movie Thor due out somewhere? Is that still happening?

    • yo go re says:

Oh, who the heck knows? It'll probably end up like the unmasked Mark IV Iron Man, and just mysteriously show up somewhere one day, without ever having an official announcement...

    • T16skyhopp says:

I was looking at a pic of the 6" Thor from Toy Fair or whatever... It looked to me that he had the insert molded/ball hinge elbows, which, while not unheard of on 6" figures, the 6" movie IM2 and upcoming Captain America figures all had double hinges. I am thinking the 6" Thor may have been a 2-Up movie figure and that's it. Makes me SADFACE.

can someone who has the 3 3/4 inch versiont ake a look and make a guess on whether the sculpts are identical?

      • Cloud says:

I'm not surprised if they share a similar sculpt. It's the same character afterall. The figure looks like it's a single joint elbow with bicep swivel joints. Should be good enough for a Thor figure.

        • T16skyhopp says:

I'm not saying its not good enough, just with the limited precedent for double hinged elbows on 6" movie figures and no renouncement or packaged pics of a 6" Thor, I think it may be a two up on display. Even the Cap has had packaged pics floating around confirming him and Movie Fury for 6".

          • yo go re says:

I'm not convince those ARE swivel/hinge elbows: if you look at the left arm (the one closest to his face), right above the hinge in the lower arm, there seems to be a square cutout that would suggest a second hinge leading up into the bicep. That may still be a 6"er...

  2. Rich says:

Good job getting the Lantern ring to light up for your photo. I really dig on that mask/ring combo and especially at the under $10 price. I'm priced out of action figures for the most part so to find sweet pop culture comic replicas for under a 10 spot is shweeeeeeet.

  3. Ridureyu says:

I actually have a Cobra Commander review sent in to MWC. Yeah, that's pretty much what I said, although I give lots of points for the cool accessories. He comes with what, FOUR MacGuffins?

  4. Stephen says:

I just wish I could figure out how to custom a Miles Mayhem head, because that CC figure would look awesome shooting at Specialist Trakker.

As it is, he got tossed into the box. The accessories, however, are much more useful.

    • yo go re says:

Really? Because I wanted the figure (to be my Miles Mayhem), but found the accessories to be a total waste...

  5. Friginator says:

It's too bad that Cobra Commander had to comne out looking so goofy. He looked puffy in the shots I had seen, but I figured that would be tooled down. Wish they had sculpted all of that detail onto a new body, instead of putting a bunch of cool detail over an existing (and fairly bulky) body. But the cape still sucks. Like pretty much every cloth cape that has ever come with a 4 inch figure.
