Guardians of the Galaxy Gamora addendum

In today's review of Marvel Legends Gamora, I said all the Guardians of the Galaxy went nearly about a decade between appearances. Here's the proof:

Notice that Groot has twice been absent from comics for a decade plus! And after the 1997 appearance, he didn't show up again until 2005.

Gamora and Drax had did have some "appearances" in between their respective deaths and resurrections, but those were flashbacks and mental images, not the real things. Still, the main point stands: these are all characters who were at some point unpopular enough to fall into limbo, and now they're major movie stars. This is why publishers will do anything to hold onto their trademarks.

There was a 1996 Starlord mini, that didn't feature the original character (just his ship and gun and outfit!) and may have been non-continuity anyway. I liked it, but it took me forever to get the last issue!

Yes there was, but Monica Rambeau being in a comic doesn't mean Mar-Vell was in it. Even if Peter quill had appeared, it still would have been more than a decade since he appeared.

I've never read the 96 series. Is it any good, or were you just trying to complete the collection?

I should probably change the Groot appearances, too: the one in Hulk was a robot (created by Xemnu), and the one in Spider-Man was a nightmare (created by Nightmare). The real one didn't come back until the 2005 book...

It was interesting: on an alien planet, a young man finds Ship, who doesn't know what happened to Peter Quill; and he ends up filling in a bit. Even though he can't fly and has no training...

Still, that version of Starlord (no hyphen, right?) that used to fly around in space has pretty much gone the way of the dodo.

  2. I think its also worth noting that those characters didn't exactly have a title that would possibly feature them either. The Engelhart "Silver Surfer" really helped bring a lot of the cosmic characters back for check-ins. Through much of the 1980s, the MU wasn't interested in revisiting discarded characters and concepts. I was always surprised that "Marvel Comics Presents" didn't do this with its back-up stories -- guess its hard to do "cosmic" in 8 pages.
