Shipmap.org offers a stunning visualization of the world's shipping traffic for one year.
If you take a look at the interactive map, you can control what is displayed - for instance, try setting it to just cargo ships, and watch as America's toys leave China and arrive at the LA docks about two and a half weeks later.
And since the data is from 2012, keep an eye out for the dock strikes that happened near the end of the year!
