To the Movies reviews"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>T, double-E-N, T-I, T-A, N-S!<br \/>\nWe the real heroes taking down the big menace!<br \/>\nTeen Titans flow!<br \/>\nTeen Titans know!<br \/>\nWhen there's real trouble, baby, Teen Titans Go!<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"425\" height=\"240\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KBZSqdTV14g?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen class=\"aligncenter\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Surely you remember <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oafe.net\/blog\/?p=27784\">how cool<\/a> the <i>Hot Wheels Character Cars<\/i> are. Well, I'd been eyeing the Teen Titans set, and after seeing <i>Teen Titans Go! to the Movies<\/i>, I took the plunge.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.oafe.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/hw_ccttg_rob1.jpg\" title=\"Robin\" width=\"215\" height=\"255\" class=\"alignright\"><i>Boom! With the smokebombs and Birdarangs\/<br \/>\nBo staff hitting, steady doin' my thang\/<br \/>\nRobin Robin the leader\/<br \/>\nRobin Robin in charge!<br \/>\n\"Show 'em your baby hands!\"<br \/>\nNah, Robin Robin's are large!<\/p>\n<p>(\"Nah, but for real, man: those are some super small baby hands.\")<br \/>\nNo they're not! Whatever! Just keep going! Just keep going!<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Toy #1 in the series is the Titans' leader, Robin. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.oafe.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/hw_ccttg_rob2.jpg\" title=\"shown twice actual size\" width=\"360\" height=\"215\" align=left style=\"margin:0px 10px 0px 0px\">There have already been two Robins in the <i>DC Character Cars<\/i> lineup: a Tim Drake version that debuted in 2013, and then a Damian Wayne \"2.0T\" that came out last year. But this does not share its mold with either of them - to match <i>Teen Titans Go!<\/i>'s cartoony, superdeformed style, the vehicles are similarly exaggerated. So <i>TTG<\/i> Robin ends up a sporty little coupe.<\/p>\n<p>However, that's not to say none of the design elements are shared. Like Damian, this Robin has a scoop air intake in the front, green fenders over all four wheels, and a windshield that's divided into two \"eyes\" with paint around it <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.oafe.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/hw_ccttg_rob3.jpg\" title=\"but what of his baby hands?\" width=\"200\" height=\"95\" align=right style=\"margin:0px 0px 0px 15px\">suggesting a mask. You may say it's a coincidence, that there are only so many ways to turn Robin into a car, but Tim didn't have any of those features. The lower edge and underside of the car are a light gray, like the soles of Robin's boots, his R symbol is placed like a hood emblem, and there's a bunch of black on the roof - both for Robin's hair, and for his cape. The coolest little feature is the license plate, which reads \"TITANS GO.\"<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.oafe.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/hw_ccttg_sf1.jpg\" title=\"Starfire\" width=\"215\" height=\"255\" align=right style=\"margin:2px 0px 0px 10px\"><i>The Star, the fire\/<br \/>\nThe live, the wire\/<br \/>\nThe alien princess in my alien attire!<br \/>\nThe energy blasts and supersonic speed!<br \/>\n\"Is she down with the Titans?\"<br \/>\nOh the-yes, indeed!<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Figure #2 is the object of Robin's affection, Princess Koriand'r of Tamaran, aka Starfire. An immigrant to Earth, Starfire tries <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.oafe.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/hw_ccttg_sf2.jpg\" title=\"shown twice actual size\" width=\"280\" height=\"215\" align=left style=\"margin:0px 10px 0px 0px\">her best to fit in, but that doesn't always work. Her upbeat attitude sees her though, however! Since she's not as tall on <i>Go!<\/i> as she was on the old cartoon, this line imagines her as some knockoff Mini Cooper.<\/p>\n<p>Star's colors are really captured well here. Her hot pink hair is the car's roof, with a very odd extension sticking straight off the back. Yes, we get that this is a nod to the way her hair points out behind her when she flies, but it doesn't make sense as a car part. The windows are all translucent green, <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.oafe.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/hw_ccttg_sf3.jpg\" title=\"uhh... what?\" width=\"190\" height=\"95\" align=right style=\"margin:0px 0px 0px 10px\">matching her power blasts and her eyes, and there are two tones of purple on the doors. If the hood is supposed to be her face, though, it needs to be more orange than peach. The metallic purple hubcaps are a very nice touch, however. One thing that doesn't work too well? The stars on her headlights. It makes those look more like eyes than they should, and doesn't really match up with any element of her costume.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.oafe.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/hw_ccttg_bb1.jpg\" title=\"Beast Boy\" width=\"215\" height=\"255\" class=\"alignright\"><i>Beast Boy, I can turn straight up into an animal!<br \/>\n\"Animal!?\"<br \/>\n\"Animal?\"<br \/>\nYes, any animal!<br \/>\nBoom! Pow! Yeah, I'm a kitten now!<br \/>\n\"Ohhhhhhhhhhh!\" Check out my kitten-meow!<\/i><\/p>\n<p>With <s>car<\/s> <s>figure<\/s> <s>character<\/s> item #3, we get to the <b>really<\/b> good stuff! Beast Boy is the best release in this series, showcasing what makes the <i>Character Cars<\/i> as a whole so dang cool. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.oafe.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/hw_ccttg_bb2.jpg\" title=\"shown twice actual size\" width=\"380\" height=\"235\" align=left style=\"margin:2px 12px 0px 0px\">The idea is to create a vehicle that not only conveys the physical look of a given character, but also their personality. So for instance, Obi-Wan Kenobi gets turned into an antique roadster, while Emperor Palpatine is a sleek limo. Stuff like that. So Beast Boy, the most rough-and-tumble member of the Teen Titans, becomes a pickup truck. But that's just the beginning.<\/p>\n<p>The truck is mostly black, with a purple hood (matching his costume) while the doors are the light green of his skin. The patch of darker green hair on the roof <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.oafe.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/hw_ccttg_bb3.jpg\" title=\"I thought Raven was supposed to be the one with some junk in the trunk?\" width=\"295\" height=\"235\" align=right style=\"margin:2px 0px 0px 10px\">is a bit hard to excuse as part of a normal truck, but it suits the character - and even the exhaust pipes behind the passenger cab come to points like his ears! The truck's front bumper looks like BB's belt. Plus, you know how Beast Boy is always drawn with one little fang poking up out of his mouth? The truck has a single white crash bar sticking up in front. Too cool! The neatest little detail, though, has to be in the back; Beast Boy is kind of a slob, so the bed of the truck is filled with all kinds of (fully painted) trash: cups, fast food wrappers, chip bags, etc. This would have been an okay release without that, but the attention to detail - both in design and execution - puts this one over the top.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.oafe.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/hw_ccttg_rav1.jpg\" title=\"Raven\" width=\"215\" height=\"255\" align=right style=\"margin:5px 0px 0px 0px\"><i>Raven is here to drop it on you even harder.<br \/>\nThere's no darker than me\/<br \/>\nI'm as dark as can be!<br \/>\nCheck it: Azarath Metrion Z-Z-Zinthos!<br \/>\nTeleporting, magical powers... we adios!<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Raven is the sarcastic, deadpan demon girl who'd rather be left alone. Unfortunately for her, that's apparently Beast Boy's \"type,\" so he's constantly trying to make time with her. (Which, to be fair, she sometimes encourages - so it's not like he's just some little creep who can't take \"no\" for an answer. And she gets jealous any time he starts paying attention to Terra.)<\/p>\n<p>Raven's car really doesn't seem very interesting, <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.oafe.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/hw_ccttg_rav2.jpg\" title=\"shown twice actual size\" width=\"340\" height=\"175\" align=left style=\"margin:7px 15px 0px 0px\">just a kind of smooth, featureless shape designed to suggest her hood and cape, complete with her clasp right in front of the non-windshield. It's... \"okay,\" but not great. The most interesting thing about it is that you can make out Sparkleface, Raven's favorite <i>Pretty Pretty Pegasus<\/i> toy, sitting in the passenger seat. That's neat, but it still leaves Raven as the weakest of the bunch. Right up until you notice how light the car feels.<\/p>\n<p>If you're overly curious and brave enough <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.oafe.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/hw_ccttg_rav3.jpg\" title=\"surprise!\" width=\"350\" height=\"255\" align=right style=\"margin:5px 0px 0px 15px\">to try pulling your toys apart, you may discover why the toy feels so insubstantial: the purple cape is basically just a car cover, a hollow piece that snaps onto the actual toy beneath it. Suddenly, this is a stripped-down little race car with an exposed engine and a body that's a black bird-shape with some pink shapes representing her belt and her demon eyes. The symbol on the engine is a black circle with the white outline of her hand in it, just like when she's using her powers. And we get a better view of Sparkleface here, too. The toy got <b>a lot<\/b> better when its hidden feature became apparent.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.oafe.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/hw_ccttg_cy1.jpg\" title=\"Cyborg\" width=\"215\" height=\"255\" align=right style=\"margin:5px 0px 0px 15px\"><i>Booyah, booyah!\/<br \/>\nGot my cannon blasters!<br \/>\nCyborg, whoo baby\/<br \/>\nMr. High Tech Master!<br \/>\n(W-W-W-W-What, what?)<br \/>\nMr. Meatball Disaster<br \/>\n(W-W-W-W-What, what?)<br \/>\nMr. Boom Boom Blaster!<\/i><\/p>\n<p>When there's trouble you know what to do: CALL CYBORG! He can shoot a rocket from his shoe! 'CAUSE HE'S CYBORG! Do-do do-do something like that. OH YEAH! Na na na na big fluffy cat! THAT'S RIGHT!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.oafe.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/hw_ccttg_cy2.jpg\" title=\"shown twice actual size\" width=\"380\" height=\"255\" class=\"alignleft\">Like Robin, Cyborg has been a Character Car before; in fact, he's had ones based on the comics, on the <i>Injustice<\/i> videogame, and on the <i>Justice League<\/i> movie. Of course, those were all the same mold, while this one is new. And the really great thing is, this new mold takes its cues from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oafe.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/hw_ccttg_cy4.jpg\">the T-Car<\/a> Cyborg built for the team.<\/p>\n<p>The vehicle is some sort of off-roader with big, chunky tires and a very <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.oafe.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/hw_ccttg_cy3.jpg\" title=\"Carfax says it's had some repair work done\" width=\"170\" height=\"135\" align=right style=\"margin:4px 0px 0px 15px\">high profile. The body is mostly white, with a dark pink T and a light blue battery symbol on the back corner, the hubcaps are metallic blue, and there's a pale blue spoiler across the back. The Cyborg-ification comes in the form of a brown panel covering the hood, windshield and roof (representing his face) and blue circuit board designs on the side and rear windows as well as the T-shaped grill. The left side of the car has extra gray armor, like the side of Cy's head, and the headlight on that side is a big red circle, like his bionic eye.<\/p>\n<p>There are five releases in this series, but they're sold in a case of eight. Can you guess how this works out? If you said \"two each of the boys, and one each of the girls,\" congratulations, you're an utter monster! And also correct. Robin, Beast Boy and Cyborg are twice as common as Starfire and Raven. Yeah. Good work, guys. Like we say, Mattel never met an idea they couldn't do wrong.<\/p>\n<p><i>Teen Titans Go!<\/i> gets a lot of hate from older fans, but it isn't even remotely as bad as some people claim.
