Set in the 1990s, Marvel's Captain Marvel is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

With Toys Я Us extinct, Walgreens has gamely picked up the slack when it comes to movie Minimates. There will be a Captain Marvel box set later this year, but there are four exclusive two-packs at the drug store right now. This one, logically, features Captain Marvel! This shows her in her standard red-and-blue costume, though it has more tiny details here than it did in the comics. And also it's done in metallic shades, because flat colors don't work as well on film as they do on the printed page. Carol's got long hair, which must get snagged when her battle helmet armors up and turns it into a mohawk. (The set does include an alternate helmet/hair piece, if you want her to look like that, plus a flight swoosh so she can take to the skies! Surprisingly? No fist-energies.)

The second figure in this series is Bron Char, a character from the comics that no one has ever heard of or could name without looking him up. He was part of a group of Kree who set up base on the moon and wanted to evolve humans to be more like Kree. Bron was the team's muscle, being a nearly Hulk-sized character who was way stronger than the rest of them - and Kree are already way stronger than humans. This Minimate uses a waist extender and a powerhouse chest, but the only sculpted parts of his green and silver Starforce uniform are the gloves. He's got blue skin, but the silver hair just makes him look elderly, not alien; he's played in the film by Rune Temte, who you best know from probably nothing you've ever seen. This really should have used the Mandarin beard.

Next

#367 - Starforce Captain Marvel/Korath

Our second Captain Marvel shows us Carol in her Starforce uniform - and unlike Funko POP!s, the Minimates have the good sense to just call her "Starforce Captain Marvel" and not "Vers." Which, yes, just means that the Kree think her proper name is "Dann-Vers," but (as our reader Nola pointed out) "vers" is a slang term that says a lot more about Carol than it's probably intended to. Not necessarily wrong, mind you, but we're not here to judge. Also, don't try looking it up at school or work. Anyway, this Minimate is pretty much the same as the other one, just done in teal and silver rather than red and blue. She comes with the same hair, the same helmet/mohawk piece, and the same swoosh stand, but her tampoed expression is different: her eyebrows are angrier and she's showing her teeth.

Hey, it's Korath! From Guardians of the Galaxy! Apparently he was doing stuff before he got his job as a Pursuer. In the comics, there are blue-skinned Kree and pink-skinned Kree, but apparently the movie is adding brown-skinned Kree, because Korath is played by Digimon Houston, a man with a name so outlandish that if you put the words "Digimon Houston" into Google, the search results automatically default to Djimon Hounsou's IMDB page. He's bald and has a little silver goatee, and wears the team's standard green uniform. Still beats the comics, where he looked like a giant lobster. This figure gets a gun to fit in the holster on his right leg, and two swords with translucent blue blades.

Previous | Next

#368 - Yon-Rogg/Phil Coulson

Look, it's 1920s Dumbledore! For some reason, some people seem to think it was revelatory news a few days ago when Marvel said Jude Law's character was Yon-Rogg and not (as assumed by the fanboys who love ferreting out every spoiler and morsel of casting news they can possibly find) Mar-Vell. How is it in any way "news" when the Marvel Legends and these Walgreens-exclusive Minimates have been out since last month and have the name "Yon-Rogg" right there on the packaging for everyone to see? Gigolo Joe is wearing his green and silver Starforce uniform, and it's a slightly different pattern from the rest. Everybody's is unique! Which makes them less of a uniform and more of a general fashion choice, doesn't it? He has a holster on his left leg, and a gun for it, and his gloves are new molds with extra bits sticking off the sides. He carries some translucent blue thingamabob which will almost certainly make more sense once we've seen the movie, and for times when you don't want him wearing his helmet, there's a "collapsed" version that lays against his back.

This is the third Phil Coulson Minimate, and it's the best yet. In addition to a superior likeness, this one gives you the option of showing him with his suit jacket on, or with it off. For those times, there are alternate white "shirt sleeve" arms and a shoulder holster. The holster won't hold the included gun - it's just a solid little chunk of plastic molded as part of the harness - but it does make the look complete. His tie is a separate piece, not simply something painted on (which might look okay when the jacket wasn't on, but you really need the 3D to stand out when it is).

Previous | Next

#369 - Nick Fury/Ronan

Samuel L. Jackson? Wearing a simple black suit? In the '90s? It'll never work! Like his buddy Coulson, Fury comes with pieces that allow you to decide whether he'll be wearing his suit jacket or not: alternate white arms and a shoulder holster harness. He again has a small pistol, and his necktie gets stripes, because he likes to display some personality within the confines of a restrictive dress code. The likeness is honestly a little better on this Minimate than it was on the Marvel Legend, because the artistic style means that creating a youthful face is just a question of not painting on extra lines, but the hair they chose for him is a better match, too.

Our final figure is Ronan the Accuser, which suggests either that he gets radicalized later, or that Starforce is full of jerkwads to begin with. I mean, Korath the Persuer just seemed like he was doing a job in Guardians of the Galaxy, but Ronan was full-on "shoot up a black church to start a race war" mode. Take it as proof that in addition to intelligent life, outer space also has conservative talk radio. Ronan Reigns uses the same hood/cape and skirt molds as the goth version, they're just done in Starforce's team colors of green and silver. ...wait, green and silver outfits, a bunch of unlikable people... is Starforce the Kree equivalent of the Philadelphia Eagles? Does Hala (the Kree homeworld) have to grease its lightpoles every time Starforce wins a battle, to keep idiot fans from climbing up them and knocking them over in celebration? Is that why Ronan carries a big hammer? For celebratory riots? This, at least, isn't the same mold the last Minimate had - you can tell, because the head isn't on upside down this time.

Previous

<i>And now, some more OAFEry:</i>

Marvel Legends addendum: dat (medium) body!

Marvel Legends addendum: dat (wrinkled cloth) body!

<a title=""Captain Marvel" Movie Series: Captain Marvel Binary Form exclusive review" href="http://www.oafe.net/blog/2019/08/captain-marvel-movie-series-captain-marvel-binary-form-exclusive-review/" rel="bookmark">"Captain Marvel" Movie Series: Captain Marvel Binary Form exclusive review

Marvel Legends: Captain Marvel review

Genis-Vell addendum: costume origins

#366 - Captain Marvel/Bron Char Ace Air Force pilot Carol Danvers becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.
