There were several supplements that expanded on that, and surely dozens if not hundreds of homebrew versions inspired by the idea, but it wasn't until 1987 that TSR published a comprehensive guide to the concept, the <i>Manual of the Planes<\/i>. The cover of the book featured a being called the Ethereal Dreadnought (today known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/dumpstatadventures.com\/the-gm-is-always-right\/the-planes-astral-plane\" target=\"dnd\" rel=\"noopener\">Astral Dreadnought<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.oafe.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/num_doomcacdnd1.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"255\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Manual of the Planes cover, showing a small human fleeing from a many-times-his-size tan monster with two-clawed hands and a single eye in the center of its head\"><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->But wait. Computer, enhance!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.oafe.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/num_doomcacdnd2.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"240\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"a close-up on the monster's head and arms\"><\/p>\n<p>Enhance and isolate!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.oafe.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/num_doomcacdnd3.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"450\" alt=\"now just its head\" class=\"aligncenter\"><\/p>\n<p>Compress by 20% and hue shift down 20 degrees!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.oafe.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/num_doomcacdnd4.jpg\" width=\"365\" height=\"380\" alt=\"the head is less tall now, and red instead of tan\" class=\"aligncenter\"><\/p>\n<p>Mirror top right and bottom left of image!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.oafe.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/num_doomcacdnd5.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"360\" alt=\"now more symmetrical, with the same size fans on both the left and right sides of its mouth, and an even number of horns on its head\" class=\"aligncenter\"><\/p>\n<p>In case you've forgotten, here's the original <i>Doom<\/i> Cacodemon sprite, at five times its original size:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.oafe.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/num_doomcacdnd7.png\" width=\"315\" height=\"330\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"the Cacodemon, slightly rounder than the above piece of art because it lacks the bony cheeks, but with its horns and fangs matching up perfectly\"><\/p>\n<p>And for one more fun experiment, what happens when you take the image we made before, turn up the saturation on the body, and desaturate the teeth and horns:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.oafe.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/num_doomcacdnd6.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"360\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"now the colors of the photoshopped DnD art perfectly match the Cacodemon sprite\"><\/p>\n<p>It even has the same heart shape on its forehead!
