The character you recognize as Chucky has always been a living, murderous doll, but he wasn't always empowered by the soul of a serial killer. Writer Don Mancini's original inspiration for the script then called \"Blood Buddy\" was the wave of '80s dolls that mimicked biological functions - if a doll could pee or grow its hair, why couldn't it bleed? Play too rough, its skin breaks, and it starts bleeding. Then you have to buy officially branded Good Guy bandages to \"heal\" it. Marketing, baby! Anyway, when the doll's blood mingles with the child's blood, Buddy starts acting out the kid's subconscious urges. All of which is to say, the idea of Chucky being covered in big, red scars could have been part of the franchise even sooner than it was!<\/p>\n

The inclusion of Chucky and Tiffany (as two separate releases) in this Universal Horror Mystery Minis<\/i> series really showcases how different the current style is from the original. Compare these to the ones we reviewed last week<\/a>, and you'll see how much has changed. It's not just that these have eyes instead of being blank, the proportions are entirely different, the \"small\" characters<\/a> are the same height as the adults<\/a>, the poses are more straightforward... this doesn't feel like an advancement. With nothing but eyebrows and dark bags, the old Tiffany managed to look like Tiffany; this one looks like animated Harley Quinn playing dress-up. Her dress is solid, too, so no fishnets for her. The stripes on Chucky's sleeves are chunkier, and he doesn't get any at all on his pantlegs.<\/p>\n

Chucky is available in a 1:6 ratio, while Tif is a much rarer 1:24 (presumably because she's been in fewer movies than he has). Given the choice between the original-style Mystery Minis<\/i> and these new ones, I'd much prefer they went back to the kind of art they had before.<\/p>\n
