Last year, I tried this same thing, but actually forgot to start taking notes until the beginning of February. For 2008, however, I was on top of things from Day One - or actually "day two," as you can see below.
The list looks a bit bigger this year, because I included more stuff. The wife's Legos, the several hundred dollars I sent to Rustin Parr for black tar heroin SDCC, things like that. But enough preamble! Let's get to it:
Well, there it is. If that's not everything, then it's darn close. There were 127 days in 2008 where I bought something, and the majority of those trips involved multiple purchases at multiple stores - that works out to be a purchase a little more often than once every three days. I was even further away from meeting my budget than I was last year, which means I need to work harder in 2009.
I really don't regret any of my purchases - even the stuff I bought on eBay didn't end up costing me more than I wanted to pay. Bidding wars are for suckers. There's only one figure on the list I eventually returned: Mudflap. He's a piece of junk. Everything else I'm pleased to own. And going over the list, it's funny how many of these purchases I can distinctly remember; it's not just "oh, this came from a Wal*Mart," but specifically which Wal*Mart it came from. And when you have nine Wal*Marts around you, that's no small feat.
A few notes: a five-figure box set counts as one purchase, but as five figures. Things that I bought for trades aren't included on the list, but the things that I got from trades are. I get a 10% discount from my regular comicshop, which is included. Any coupons or sales have been subtracted before the items go on the list.
Here are some numbers:
Total number of purchases: 436
Total number of figures: 708
Total money spent: $5,347.86
Average spent per purchase: $12.27
Average spent per figure: $7.55
Average per month: $445.66; 36.33 purchases; 59 figures
Average per week: $102.84; 8.38 purchases; 13.62 figures
Average per day: $14.61; 1.19 purchases; 1.93 figures
By store:
TRU: 108 purchases
Wal*Mart: 93 purchases
Target: 72 purchase
Comicshops: 37 purchases
FYE: 16 purchases
Spencer's: 8 purchases
Suncoast: 5 purchases
Hot Topic: 2 purchases
KB Toys: 2 purchases
Grocery store: 2 purchase
Longest gap between purchases: 9 days (Oct. 27 - Nov. 4)
Most days in a row with purchases: 4 (Nov. 16-19)
Most expensive day: November 30 ($298.32)
With the price of everything going up, I expect 2009 will be smaller. The toys will cost more, and I've trimmed back my budget. Wish me luck.
