Frosty Frights: Brrr Beast exclusive review

Mini-Figure Mini-Reviews

So when I finally remembered I had those DC keshi figures from Wendy's and needed to review them, I had to look up when they came out. When I did, I found out two things; first, that they came out a year ago, and second, that this year Wendy's has another cool kids meal premium: Frosty Frights, monsterized versions of their signature dessert drink. There are six of them, and naturally I had to pick up the werewolf.

When the full moon is high and bright,
He barks and howls with all his might.

The Frosty is based on a "secret formula" frosted malted sold at a Cleveland racetrack in the '60s. Wendy's Founder Dave Thomas wanted some kind of ice cream thing to put on his new restaurant's menu, so he contacted a company that sold ice cream machines and asked if they knew anything special. Once Wendy's began expanding outside their original area and could no longer buy all their ingredients from the same supplier, they had to bring in a food scientist to determine what specific emulsifiers snd stabilizers would be needed, and then franchisees could go to any dairy and tell them what they needed.

All six of the "Frosty Frights" figures are shaped like a cup, with Frosty sticking out the top as a form of "hair." A Frosty's flavor is a blend of chocolate and vanilla (because Dave thought pure chocolate would overpower the taste of the burgers) and the texture is somewhere between a soft serve ice cream and a traditional milkshake, and it's impressive how much the top of Brrr Beast's head accurately matches both the color and texture of the real thing, despite just being plastic. The official character art is given more detail than the real toy has, as you'd expect from a free giveaway: the sculpt is smooth, while the art makes him look furry, and makes his ears a different color from the drink they emerge from. Additionally, his shirt has the Wendy's logo on the back (just the name, not the girl with "MOM" written in her collar), but not the plaid pattern seen in the art.

Brrr Beast is about 3¼" tall, and has no articulation. The Frosty Frights have spindly black noodle arms that terminate is big round "fists," and they've got hollow little feet. The eyes and smile are sculpted - including his cute wee fangs! Whoever did this even made the edges of the shirt a bit ragged, and sculpted buttons on one side and buttonholes on the other. Although... since the buttons are on the left, doesn't that mean this is a woman's shirt? But the card specifically called him a boy. Nobody tell the weirdos there's a crossdressing kids meal toy, they already have enough to pretend to get mad about as it is.

While Brrr Beast's normal colors are an orange body and red shirt, there are also chase variants of the figures, and his is a "Blue Moon" version. You'll never guess what color he is! The figures are bagged, so you can't tell if you're getting the regular or variant. In addition to the figurine itself, there's a small card and a sheet of stickers you could use to decorate him.

I like a Frosty better than other fast food milkshakes, and I like werewolves, so I had to track Brrr Beast down. The first Wendy's I went to was already sold out of Frosty Frights (at the beginning of September!?), but the second was happy to hand me one for free. This is a super cute little monster, but not quite good enough to inspire me to worry about getting the others. But I gotta say, having this on my desk is really giving me a Frosty craving.

Fortunately, if you don't have a Wendy's nearby, you can easily make Frosty at home: 14 oz. can of sweetened condensed milk, 8 oz. tub of Cool Whip, half a gallon of chocolate milk. Blend them all together and freeze. It is literally that easy. You can make some cookies or banana salad while you're waiting.
