GI Joe Action Marine addendum

As mentioned in today's review, here's the 1994 message from Hasbro's CEO about GI Joe's 30th anniversary:

In 1964, America was introduced to the very first GI Joe. Thirty years later, GI Joe continues to fill children with an exciting sense of adventure and fun, which is all we at Hasbro ever wanted to do. Around the world we salute Joe on his 30th, and may this legend continue to bring endless hours of joy to the young, and the young at heart, for another 30 years. --(signed) Alan G. Hassenfeld, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Hasbro Inc.

It's been another 30 years, Al, so it looks like you got your wish!

Neither the original 1964 Action Marine nor the 1994 Commemorative edition were snipers, but Hasbro did release a 1:6 scale "US Marine Corps Sniper" figure in 1997, with a whole panel of information on the inside flap of the box:

The U.S. Marine Corps Sniper is a master of many military disciplines. Judgment, patience, marksmanship, and camouflage are basic Sniper requirements. With the element of surprise as his best advantage, the mission and his life depend on achieving a concealed position within striking distance of the enemy. Often this means he must move in dangerously close. Camouflaged against detection, his every movement is slow, deliberate and well-planned. He may take hours or days to move himself and his equipment across a simple open field. Once he has reached his desired striking position, he creates a concealed nest that will enable him to avoid detection even when the enemy is only feet away.

He knows how to wait. When the right opportunity presents itself, a successful strike can rout and confuse the enemy, allowing the Sniper to withdraw. A missed opportunity or a bad shot can compromise his position. He is often cut off from command and must rely solely upon his own skill, training and judgment. The US Marine Corps Sniper, or "Scout-Sniper" as he is sometimes called, may also be used for reconnaissance. He frequently calls in, and spots for artillery and/or airstrikes.

The Sniper's primary weapon is a 7.62mm M40A1 Sniping Rifle. This is a single shot, bolt action rifle with a heavy barrel and a wooden stock. The sight is kept in place at all times and may bear camouflage paint to appear as an extension of the Sniper.

Not always solitary creatures, snipers sometimes find it necessary to work in teams. An assistant accompanies the Sniper, bringing along an assault rifle as insurance in case the mission gets out of hand.
