Here's James Goddard's revision of Capcom Japan's first take on Dee Jay, making him happier and adding in his twin braids to show movement in the animation:
If you zoom in, you can even see the letters on his pants spelling out M-A-N, proving the word had yet to be changed. "Mantis," it turns out, was the character's working name. Another possibility would have seen him introduced to the world as "J.J. Bam." The final identity is not only a nod to the character's musical background, but also to Goddard's own online handle at the time: "DJames."
