{"id":23900,"date":"2017-04-18T23:33:03","date_gmt":"2017-04-19T03:33:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.oafe.net\/blog\/?p=23900"},"modified":"2023-07-31T05:17:48","modified_gmt":"2023-07-31T09:17:48","slug":"the-perfect-caption-for-any-occasion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oafe.net\/blog\/2017\/04\/the-perfect-caption-for-any-occasion\/","title":{"rendered":"The perfect caption for any occasion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>The New Yorker<\/i> is, of course, famous for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/cartoons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">its cartoons<\/a>, which are often weirdly offbeat or sometimes just plain ol' inscrutable.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oafe.net\/yo\/playmobil5957.php\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.oafe.net\/yo\/art\/playmobil5957_7.jpg\" width=\"310\" height=\"255\" class=\"aligncenter\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->A decade or so ago, a gentleman by the name of Charles Lavoie posited that nearly every comic could be given the same caption and still work perfectly fine: \"Christ, what an asshole!\"<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.oafe.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/nyc1.jpg\" title=\"Christ, what an asshole!\" width=\"450\" height=\"335\" class=\"aligncenter\"><\/p>\n<p>(Yes, it even works <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertsinclair.net\/comic\/asshole.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">for non-<i>New Yorker<\/i> comics<\/a>, too.)<\/p>\n<p>A few years later, a second universal caption was discovered: \"I'd like to add you to my professional network on LinkedIn.\"<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.oafe.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/nyc2.jpg\" title=\"I'd like to add you to my professional network on LinkedIn.\" width=\"450\" height=\"355\" class=\"aligncenter\"><\/p>\n<p>In February, a third <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/thwphipps\/status\/827526665593053185\" target=\"twit\" rel=\"noopener\">reared its head<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.oafe.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/nyc3.jpg\" title=\"So much for the tolerant left.\" width=\"350\" height=\"435\" class=\"aligncenter\"><\/p>\n<p>But now, <b>now<\/b> we have <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RaeBeta\/status\/854773645708865537\" target=\"twit\" rel=\"noopener\">the ultimate one-size-fits-all caption<\/a>.
