Red

Fraggle Rock
by yo go re

We all have that one friend who's energetic, outgoing... and utterly tiring to hang out with for a long time.

Red Fraggle loves swimming and sports! She's always up for a race, a diving competition or a game of rock hockey. Sometimes her competitive nature can get her into trouble, but she has a giant heart and cares deeply for her friends, including her best friend Mokey. She likes doing just about everything with them, except listening to another postcard from Gobo's Uncle Travelling Matt!

Red thinks Uncle Travelling Matt's postcards can't be real, that the Silly Creatures can't be that silly, but does she dislike them because she thinks he's making it up, or does she think he's making it up because she doesn't like them? What is the base level of her reasoning? She eventually admitted she doesn't like that Matt's stories take attention away from her, so she'd be a natural for Instagram if Fraggles had devices.

Fraggles generally have skin of various bright colors, so naturally Red's color is... yellow. But don't worry, her hair is... orange. But she ties her hair into those big pigtails using little bows, and the bows are... pink. Okay, look, unless she's named after the inside of her mouth, then would she have a different name if she wore a different shirt? Or would she just wear a different shirt if she had a different name?

Red's signature garment is a red turtleneck sweater, with the neck on this toy being a separate piece that's just held in place by the head. Not really sure why it needed to be done that way, unless they're planning to reuse the chest for someone else in the future, but I don't know who that would be. She's got the sculpted fur all the way down her tail and the slight texture on her skin, and her hair and baloobius manage to look like individual strands despite being solid sculpts. Lovely!

The figure's articulation is as good as the rest, though my figure did require some corrections once I opened it: unless the knees are supposed to come down lower on the back than on the front, her legs were backwards; that meant I needed to pop them off the balljoints at the hips, but once that was done, the feet were on the wrong sides, so now I had to switch those; or rather, judging by the cut-outs for the hinges to move, I needed to switch the entire shin. Plus side, I did get to see firsthand how the articulation for this line works, like how the fur "body" is really just a big pair of underwear that plugs into the solid frame all the joints attach to. (Additionally: the left elbow's peg broke after writing, while taking photos for the review.)

Red's alternate head shows her extremely discombobulated: not only are her eyes crossed, like she's just been bonked on the head or something, her pigtails are smaller as well, which makes them look like they're wet. Did she nearly drown? The pigtails fit into the head via specifically-shaped pegs, and since the holes are the same shape on both portraits, that means you can switch them if you want. Play value! Just make sure not to twist them to try to get them out: doing that could cause breakage. Also keep in mind that means they're not actually poseable, so don't expect to have them trailing behind her while she runs and jumps or anything.

Right out of the package, Red is wearing a whistle around her neck, because she's such a sporty type. Her other accessories include a pair of maracas, a magnifying glass, and a hat. Those last two come with the Season 5 episode "Inspector Red," though she also wore a raincoat with them - if you want to complete the look, you'll need to borrow one from Flasher Gremlin or something. The removable pigtails come into play again here, because the hat has holes to slot them through. Otherwise it wouldn't fit her head!

Red Fraggle is loud, competitive, snarky, and can be kind of a jerk to her friends, yet the show doesn't treat her like a villain or limit her to only those traits - she really does care about those around her, she just doesn't know how to show it all the time. Even in a society of singing, dancing whatnots, she's easily the most energetic one around, and will be ready to spice up your Muppet collection.
