Quicksilver

Marvel Legends Retro Collection
by Shocka

Quiksilver is a brand of surf-inspired apparel and accessories that was founded in 1969 in Torquay, Victoria, but is now based in Huntington Beach, California. It is one of the world's largest brands of surfwear and boardsport-related equipment.

Hold on, no, that's not right!

Along with his twin sister, the Scarlet Witch, the "speedster" Quicksilver joined the Avengers after leaving Magneto's Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.

DC's Flashes may be ludicrously overpowered, but Marvel has mostly managed to avoid writing themselves into that particular corner by having fewer speedster characters, most notably Magneto offspring Pietro Maximoff, aka Quicksilver. Originally a mutant with speed powers (later retconned to a "Human mutate" because Marvel is also awful) Pietro's powers are the usual stuff: highly efficient metabolism, strong bones and joints, all that. And to keep from running into walls, he processes sensory information way way faster than normal humans do. Like an ADHD person listening to someone finish a sentence they understood within the first few seconds, Pietro Maximoff lives in HELL. A lot of people watch YouTube at speed-and-a-half - imagine watching it at 0.25 speed, or slower. While the idea of having super-speed sounds terrific, Quicksilver shows how it can be a real Monkey's Paw.

This is the second Pietro release from Hasbro's modern Marvel Legends line, after one in a box set with his sister and their father, and seemingly shares the same body sculpt. If it ain't broke, etc. The key difference here is the costume, which here depicts Quicksilver's debut costume, a green bodysuit with white lightning bolt from shoulder to hip. Or is it? Although this figure captures his lightning shaped white belt, both the original Brotherhood of Evil Mutants Quicksilver costume and the more simplified garb he donned as part of the Avengers had light green gloves that matched his outer-underwear. In a move that seems like Hasbro cheaping out, Pietro's costume here features the same white gloves as the previous paint, and a darker green out-undies than the rest of the outfit. That's an inversion of brightness for the colors!! What are you doing, Hasbro?

The other difference is the head sculpt, which features the same slicked-back hair as if Pietro is mid-run, as well as new streaks of hair from his forehead to complete the illusion. They look... odd. My read on them is that they look more like Mantis' antennae than hair, largely because of the overly-neat, too-symmetrical way they come out of his head. When posed stationary, they just look strange, and without an additional interchangeable head, this is what Pietro is stuck with. At least it's not overly large, this time? And since both Pietros use the same body, you can trade the heads to whichever version you feel like.

His only accessories are two clenched fists, simulating the frustration collectors have with this price-gouging expensive bull. Way to add value for money, Hasbro!! Sure glad this guy retails for just-as-expensive-or-more-so Legends that include a whole Build-a-Figure piece, as well as better accessories!! "Oh, but what could they possibly give him," you ask, "he's just a fast guy." Movement effects, like swooshes for his limbs or dust clouds for his feet, how about? They didn't even give him the flat "running" hands from before!

Fortunately, the articulation here is still great. He's got swivel/hinge ankles, swivel boot tops, double-hinged knees, swivel thighs, balljointed hips, swivel waist, hinged chest, swivel/hinge wrists, double-hinged elbows, swivel biceps, swivel/hinge shoulders, pectoral hinges, a hinged neck, and a balljointed head. Hinged toes would have been nice, to make it easier for him to push off while running. There's plenty of poseability here though, and with a base (sold separately lol) you can get a good pose of Pietro rushing to the tailor so they can make his costume actually accurate. This version of the mold has a hole in the back the older Quicksilver didn't, and the hinges are now pinless.

Is Quicksilver worth your money? I truly doubt it. This isn't the costume he's known for, and even if you do want a figure based on his original design this one really isn't it. It's hard to know why Hasbro makes the lousy decisions they do; no matter how many covers I search for I can't find any where he wears this mismatch of an outfit. Rush, don't walk, to leave this one on the shelf. Tap into the Speed Force of indifference to do it.
