Headpool

Deadpool & Wolverine
by yo go re

Spoilers ahead! Er, sorry, that should probably be "spoilers: a Head!"

In the comics, Headpool is a refugee from Earth-2149. We know there's an equivalent of that for the MCU, but we don't know if this Headpool is from there. When the character was teased before the movie opened, some fans speculated he'd be revealed as the decapitated "Fake-Deadpool" from X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which is honestly kind of funny; if you want to pretend it's his real backstory, have at it! The movie isn't going to disagree with you.

Like the previous ML Headpool, this one gets a short stand to allow him to "fly" - rather than a beanie with a chinstrap, he looks to be wearing an old-fashioned leather aviation cap. Still has a propeller though, and it can still turn. The bottom of the mask is torn away, revealing his fully skeletal mouth - no remnants of rotting flesh sticking to him, here. Considering the way the lower part of his face is hanging out, this is a missed opportunity to have an articulated jaw. Headpool was voiced by Nathan Fillion, which is a decent bit of joke casting: Headpool is a variant of Deadpool; Deadpool is played by Ryan Reynolds; Ryan Reynolds played Green Lantern; Nathan Fillion is going to be playing (a) Green Lantern. It's all connected!

One thing that seems odd about the figure is the size. Like, he's a skull, yes? And your skull, being inside your head, is smaller than the outside of your head (unless you get those good Marvel steroids). But Headpool is larger than an in-scale human head would be, even before considering things like "skin" or "muscle." At the very minimum, Headpool should be sized like any other figure's head, not larger. But - but! - notice the fourth word in this paragraph: "seems." The size seems odd, but it's actually true to the movie. In a deleted scene where Kidpool and Headpool return to Earth-10005 to hang out with Peter, you can tell that this figure is sized exactly like he was in the film. Betcha the animators increased his size so he wouldn't get overshadowed on-screen in those big Deadpool Corps crowd shots. And now he also won't get overshadowed in your display.

In addition to his little hover-stand, Headpool gets one other accessory: a bonus pack-in figure! Always fun. This one is Logan.

Here's a take for you: it hurts to say this, after more than two decades of waiting, but movie Wolverine did not look great in the yellow costume. He did not look great with the mask on, he did not look great with the mask off, he did not look great with sleeves, he did not look great without sleeves, he simply did not look as good in yellow spandex as he did in black leather in 2000. He looks fine, it's decent, he looks good enough judged alone, but it's not the super-amazing upgrade fans were convinced it would be when they spent 20 years agitating for it. There's a costumed Wolverine toy in this line, but it (fittingly) doesn't look great and I didn't feel the need to get it the one time I saw it at the store. But this set was worth preordering online.

This is civilian Logan, as Deadpool found him when he went to the bar on Earth-whatever. It's a mostly new sculpt, wearing clothes similar to the various Marvel Legends "suit" bodies, but not the same as any of them. In part because he's so big, but also because the clothes are so casual. At first I thought he had the same torso as Logan 2029, because of the open shirt, but this one's plaid shirt is open lower, and he has an undershirt beneath it - it's Origins Wolverine! His jacket is new, with four big buttons and his gloves stuffed in the pocket, and that also meant new arms because the cuffs on the sleeves didn't match any of the existing molds. The wrinkles on his pants are smoother, and even if they weren't, there's a sculpted texture covering the entire garment that no one's had before. His blue superhero boots stick out the bottom of the pantlegs, making him look like he's wearing really flashy sneakers.

The hands (both with and without claws) are likely reused, since the claws are removable and Hasbro's stopped doing that now. Although the movie kept going on and on about how this was the "worst" Wolverine, it never really showed him being any different than the one we knew and loved; Hugh Jackman put 150% into his acting, just like he did in Logan, but it was the same character as Logan going through the same arc as Logan; so what, exactly, about him is "worst"? It's certainly not the rumpled Hugh Jackman likeness, which is the best we've seen on a 6" scale Wolverine toy. (There may be better 12" ones, I just don't know them.) The face is great, and his hair a mess, as it should be. Perfect! The hands swap easily enough, but it would have been nice if he had an open pair to hold a bottle and glass you might source from elsewhere. That might be asking too much of a simple pack-in bonus figure like this, though.

Deadpool & Wolverine was outstanding fun, and we'd love to see lots more figures from it; not just the cameos, all the alternate reality Wolverines, too (the brown costume looked better than the yellow). Of course, we're all still waiting for Multiverse of Madness' Illuminati a bunch of the Lokis from Loki Season 1, and even a couple No Way Home villains, so I wouldn't leave empty spots on the shelf for them if I were you. This two-pack of Headpool with Logan is the best toy offering from the movie so far, but we really hope there will be more.
