Oh no! His nipples!
Drax finally dons a shirt and becomes a more active member of the Guardians by helping set up their new headquarters - but he still has trouble thinking before he acts.
It's neat how that directly references Drax's arc in the movie without giving anything away. Too often we get just the vaguest copy that means nothing (looking your way, No Way Home because the writer is trying to avoid spoilers, but whoever did this one wrote something meaningful (managing to hint at one of the film's more emotional beats) without telling you too much and ruining the experience. Now, if only that work could appear on the packaging, instead of just the marketing material on the website, everything would be great.
Drax was the most boring (movie) figure in the GotG2 line, because all he had going for him was an angrier head and the color of pants he was wearing. This one goes back to a neutral expression (an improved sculpt over the first movie, naturally, much more Bautista-y than before) but is still more exciting than the last Drax thanks to his clothes.
If you thought it was bad Star-Lord was wearing
pants from 2017, pity poor Drax, who's been wearing the same thing since 2014. You can tell just from looking at the box he's using the same lower body mold from the first movie (and that box set), from hips to heels. He doesn't have a bare chest this time, though this is really more of a "jacket" than a "shirt" he's donned. The movie Guardians have become something of an official governing body now, so they need to dress alike, sharing blue jackets with red trim. Movie Drax may not be as huge as comicbook Drax is, but it's still funny to see how much larger Dave Bautista is then Chris Pratt.
The gold symbol sculpted in
the center of Drax's chest is apparently the Guardians of the Galaxy sigil, though it was originally just Star-Lord's: it was on his forehead when the character first appeared in 1976, and remained his when he was brought back from obscurity in 2004. Now it's just for everybody! Way to dilute your personal brand, Peter.
The new torso doesn't offer any new articulation - can't mix 2023 torsos with 2014 legs, after all. He moves at te head, neck, shoulders, biceps, elbows, wrists, chest, waist, hips, thighs, knees, boots, and ankles. Unlike my Star-Lord, all Drax's joints move easily right out of the box, so that's nice.
No surprise the figure uses the same knives he always has. They can still store in his boots when he's not slashing someone apart. The second movie's Drax came with a bazooka, you know.
Drax uses more new parts than Star-Lord, and larger ones too, but he still gets a piece of the GOOD DOG Cosmo Build-A-Figure: her right front leg.
Drax isn't the pure comic relief he was in Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2, instead going back to the kind of pathos we saw in Volume 1. That alone isn't reason enough to get this figure, but the fact he doesn't look like every other Drax they've made really helps.
