Necronominus and Conabus

Mythic Legions
by yo go re

War, Famine, Pestilence, and now at last Death. The Four Horsemen's Four Horsemen are complete!

The last of the Dark Four to return to Mythoss, Necronominus is the most powerful of these evil Gods. While the Dark Four have no leader, they all defer to Necronominus, for all their powers lead to death, and that is his domain. A vision of pure horror clad in tattered vestments and wielding the mighty Godrazor, Necronominus resurrects an army of the undead to follow behind him. They are a mindless force totally devoted to the Lord of Death and his children, an army that swells as fallen foes are touched by the dark magic of the Godrazor to become soldiers for the Congregation of Necronominus.

Considering that two-thirds of his kids are skeletons, you have no excuse for being alarmed that Necronominus himself is one, as well. Work on the toy actually began even before Mythic Legions changed scales - back then, he would have used one of the standard armored torsos, but this is much better! You may think at first it's the same as the plain skeleton, but there are lots of differences once you really start looking at it, from the armored plate inside his stomach to the extra holes in his back to attach his extras. He wears a belt with a conjoined skull in the center, a truly massive collar on his shoulders, and what the Horsemen described as the most complex softgoods piece CJESIM has even made for them: it's a black cape and a red stole, with an intricate printed patten on each. And for once, there's actually a specific way to attach it! The thing we've all wanted from them for years now! The emblems on the front of the shoulders detatch, and loops on the cloth get held in place by the pegs.

The Dark Four love their stupid Easter hats, and Necronominus is no exception. If you thought Illythia's crown was going to be the dumbest in the group, prepare to have your mind blown! He actual head is, of course, a skull, with small golden eyes set deep in the sockets. His crown appears to be a pair of extremely long wings (or maybe just individual feathers) that would measure several feet long in real life. Those are then surrounded by a cage of stylized golden bones that curves upward to a distinct point. There's a half-circle starburst emblem on the forehead, and then what appear to be halves of a horse jawbone stretching down to frame his face. It's more ridiculous in person than it appeared in the promotional photos, but it is balanced out by the rest of the body.

There's an Easter egg on the figure, too. If you pull back the crown from the forehead (easy to do because it's molded from soft PVC), you'll find a third eye socket on his forehead. That's already surprising enough, since there was no indication of it before the toys arrived, but there's still more: there are three different versions, each with a different sculpt inside the socket! There's a number etched in on the back of the jaw, where it won't be seen unless the head is off the joint, so you can tell which variant you got even without pulling the crown up: Head 1 has an extra set of teeth; Head 2 has a large, colorful eye; and Head 3 has a second, tinier skull peeking out. What a cool thing to include!

All the Dark Four get big wings (well, technically Illythia just had extra arms and a bunch of accessories, but they filled the same visual role), and Necronominus' are impressive. The original plan was that he'd just reuse the Gothitropolis bone wings, but the Horsemen decided that wouldn't be enough for him. These wings are absolutely massive, broader each than his entire body. They look even more like hands than the Gothitropolis wings did, with distinct thumbs that stick out. In fact, they need to be assembled after you open the figure, because there was no way to make them fit in the package otherwise! (You'll also have to plug in the feet, as well, because otherwise his crown would make him too tall for the blister.) In addition to all the usual Mythic Legions articulation, the wings add swivel/hinges at the wrist, elbow, and shoulder.

Necronominus' weapon, the Godrazor, is slightly less impressive since we already had one Grim Reaper scythe in this series, but this isn't the same thing; befitting his status, this one is larger and more ornate. It also shows off how self-obessessed he is, because the top is decorated with a small, golden figurehead that looks like Necronominus himself, including his dumb hat. And the little guy is even holding his own similarly small scythe! It's skeletons and scythes all the way down!

You can't very well be a horseman without a horse to man, but this one gets something new: his own bio!

The skeletal steed of Necronominus, Conabus is every bit the vision of horror that his master is. It is said that the clopping of Conabus's hooves awakens the dead, and then the touch of his master's relic weapon, the Godrazor, brings them back from the peace of the grave and makes them a soldier in his undead army. Once risen, they form up like supplicants behind the Lord of Death, moving in unison with the clopping of his pale horse.

So I admit: I did not get, until just now, that all four of the evil Mythic Legions horses are named after Greek mythology. Αιθων, Φοβος, Φλογευς, and Κοναβος were the fire-breathing horses that pulled Ares' chariot. Konabos translates to "a loud, confused sound," so it makes sense his story is about the din his hooves make.

Conabus is the most distinct 4H horse yet, because he's 95% skeleton. If you take off all his armor (which you can do, very easily), you'll find a few scraps of dark red muscle still sticking to a few of the bones - it's a way to bulk up some otherwise-thin areas so they can hide the joints or simply prevent the toy from snapping in a thin spot. The articulation is the same here as on the other horses, despite the distinct lack of skin: balljoints for the head, neck, and hips, swivel/hinges for the shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees, ankles, toes, and tail. His armor includes a bone headdress that also give him big tusks, armor on the neck, bones and straps dangling against his chest, a sadle and pad, a pair of shields that hang on his hips, and a faded gray tail. Necronominus' giant belt does make it a little hard for him to sit on the horse, but not impossible.

It's really fun that Mythic Legions has managed to release all four evil gods with their steeds. Even if you don't care about the story, it's not like anyone else has (successfully) made (Biblical) Four Horsemen figures before, so there's an appeal there that goes beyond the line in which they originated.
