Miles Morales (Brooklyn 2099 Suit)

Marvel's Spider-Man 2
by yo go re

So does this count as breaking the promise from last time, or no?

Miles Morales fights to save New York from multiple threats, otherworldly and terrestrial. What sacrifices must be made to heal the world?

Remember how Gwenpool was created because Marvel did an entire month of variant covers in 2015 to celebrate the popularity of Spider-Gwen? Well, in November 2019, they had a similar theme month in honor of the upcoming return of the 2099 books. Miles Morales #12 was part of the series, and saw cover artist Lee Garbett designing the Miles of the future. That costume made it into Miles' own videogame, so when Sony's Marvel's Insomniac's Spider-Man 2 for the PS5 2023 60fps Any% Glitchless came out, it needed a different 2099 suit for him.

The design came from artist Taurin Clarke, who's done lots of work for Marvel, DC, Star Wars... little bit of everything. The costume definitely says "spider," but I'm not sure how much it says "future"; like, the shaped armor plates on the upper body that form a highly stylized spider shape? Yeah, definitely future. The fact he seems to be wearing that with sweatpants? Less so. He gets external webshooters, which is leaning toward making this more of a "Scarlet Spider 2099" (even with the colors) than anything else. He's wearing some sort of utility belt with the widest buckle ever, and cute little booties that come up just over his ankle.

The mask he wears is more like a helmet. It appears to be a solid surface, not just cloth, and the eyes are set down into it. He's got the big angular pair of eyes, of course, but there are smaller pairs above those, and two more pairs below them on the cheeks. There are even three more tiny little dots in a triangle formation on each side of the forehead. If I had to make up an excuse for what they are, I'd say he has mini cameras built into the helmet, giving him a wider view of the world than natural human eyes would.

Since Miles is best known for wearing a black costume with red designs, this update does make sense. The cloth parts of the suit are black, while the armor is simply a dark, dark grey. The eyes, accents on the armor, and the stripes down the legs of the pants are all red, though it's a surprisingly dark shade, much darker than the (vibrant) original concept art and the (more muted) in-game renders. Everywhere else, it looks like the red should be an electronic glow, but on the toy is just more armor.

In a time when Hasbro is trying to charge $30 for a repainted body with a new head, the fact this figure is 100% original Dennis Chan sculpt - and isn't missing any articulation - puts lie to the claim that Hasbro "has to" cut corners that way in the normal lines. He's got a balljointed head, hinged neck, pec hinges, swivel/hinge shoulders, swivel biceps, double-hinged elbows, swivel/hinge wrists, a hinged chest, swivel waist, balljointed hips, swivel thighs, double-hinged knees, swivel ankles, and swivel/hinge feet. When you let a company get away with cheating you once, they'll try to get away with cheating you every time thereafter, so unless Sony is helping foot the bill for these Gamerverse figures, there's no excuse for why regular Marvel Legends shouldn't all meet this same level of quality.

The figure's only accessories are the two web-splats we've seen several times already, but not enough times to be tired of them yet. You also get your choice of fists, thwiping hands, or crawling hands, which have the fingers bent drastically to make it clear they're sticking to a wall, not just splayed weirdly.

The Brooklyn 2099 suit may not have a great name, but it's not like they could call the character "Miles Morales 2099," right? It's not a superhero name, even if that's all anybody ever calls him. This suit looks more directly connected to the normal modern-day costume than any Spider-Man 2099 has been to Peter Parker. It may not be the most iconic alternate skin in the game, but it does make for a pretty awesome action figure, no matter who it represents.
