Just think: if the third movie hadn't been severely delayed, we probably never would have gotten this figure.
Miles G. enters into a life of crime under the guidance and protection of his Uncle Aaron, taking on the guise of the terrifying villain known as the Prowler.
Well, is he a villain? At this point, we don't even know if Spider-Verse 3 really will ever be released, but here in the wake of Across, it's a popular theory that he became Prowler not to be a villain, but because that's the kind of hero he had to be to survive in his world (since he was supposed to be Earth E-42's Spider). The official art book just describes him as taking the role of "the vigilante" Prowler, handily sidestepping the question of good and evil entirely. I mean, sure, "life of crime" certainly has vibes to it, but remember that things even regular Spider-Man does aren't legal, so it's still possible Kilometers Morales is less than a full-on villain.
The figure is packaged with his human face showing, but it does
include his Prowler mask, as well. While Aaron's mask was just cloth, this one is more like metal, and even has two bumps on the jawline like a gas mask - as plenty of protestors have learned, if you're going against violent thugs who love to use tear gas, being able to see and breathe safely is very important. The shapes around the eyes are raised elements, rather than just being painted or even only having sculpted edges.
In the scene where Kilometers introduces himself to Miles, the art does a great job of showing the difference between them - and not just the hair. Kilometers is thinner and shorter, sure, but more subtly, Miles' cartoon model is shaded with halftone dots, while Kilometers gets hatch lines. Neat! The figure is sculpted with his eyes half-lidded, which is exactly the expression he gave in the film.
Rather than the type of costume Aaron wore,
Kilometers has a jacket over a regular shirt and cargo pants. The collar of his coat does call back to that weird spike on the top of Prowler's cape, though, so that's nice design. He's running around in regular sneakers, but wears a stylized utility belt and, of course, the big metal gauntlet claws Prowler had, the ones that make him more than a guy wearing a funny sweater to rob a house, the ones that make him a hitman for the Kingpin. His are thinner, presumably since he's a teenager and not an adult, but they still have plates on the back of the hands and pistons or tubes of some sort circling the forearms.
Miles "Tails" Prowler is even less green than his uncle was. He's grey and pink and purple, with a few minor accents in teal and orange to try to suggest the artstyle of Earth E-42. The symbol on his shirt still doesn't make any identifiable sense, but it's spray-painted on just like Miles' original Spider-suit. They may be from different worlds, but they're still the same person and have the same interests.
Articulation is almost up to the usual standards -
Hasbro removing shin joints from their Legends is a bad move, but it's even worse than usual when the figure's got cuffed pantlegs that highlight exactly where the joint should have gone. Kilometers may not have shins, but he does have swivel/hinge ankles, double-hinged knees, swivel thighs, balljoint hips, a swivel waist, hinged chest, barbell head, swivel/hinge shoulders, swivel/hinge elbows, and swivel/hinge wrists. His belt has two straps hanging from the back of it, but those don't get in the way of his movement at all.
Unlike Uncle Aaron, Kilometers actually gets alternate hands! It was so silly that the first movie's Prowler figure didn't have his claws out, but this one doesn't repeat that mistake. You have your choice of a closed fist (right) and a gripping hand (left), or a pair that are open wide. Too bad the color doesn't match the 2021 toy, or you could do some selective trading. We also get a backpack that has to slide up his arms like a real one would.
Across the Spider-Verse ended with one heck of a cliffhanger, and the unfulfillable promise of the conclusion to be due just a few months later. (Seriously: the writers strike was the best excuse they could have been handed, because there was no way on god's green Earth SV3 was ever going to be ready by June 2, 2023.) We're currently more than two years away from finding out if the conclusion is any good, but even if it's not, Hasbro's made a good toy of Kilometers Morales so you can at least re-create the finale of the second film.
