We kept referring to the Halloween Edition Inquisitor as part of a two-pack, but only reviewed one figure. Time for the second!
Celebrate the season with specially designed Star Wars figures from The Black Series.
Although the box just identifies this figure as "Duros Bounty Hunter," it's not like there are a ton of Duros figures, bounty hunters or not, so this is pretty obviously a reused Cad Bane - not the one we reviewed, the 2023 live-action Book of Boba Fett version. And conveniently, that figure had a bio we haven't already used a bunch of times: Renowned bounty hunter Cad Bane was known for his impressive arsenal of weapons and allies. His work with the Pyke Syndicate on Tatooine led him face-to-face with Boba Fett. See how nice it is when you pay copywriters to do their job?
While the first figure in this set was a Dracula, not-Cad-Bane gets to be turned into a Frankenstein. I suppose for no reason more than Cad Bane had those tubes coming out of his cheeks and they kind of looked like neck-bolts? And he's got a metal plate on top of his head. It's not the strongest connection in the world, but we've seen worse. And really, isn't the entire point doing something creative with the paint and accessories?
Frankenbane gets a green face rather than light blue, but he retains his black skullcap to suggest hair. There's a black incision painted across his forehead, with a few silver sutures holding it shut.
Hie coat ad gloves are a dark teal, and that's worn over a purple shirt and gray pants. His boots are a simple flat brown - it's a shame they couldn't figure out a way to create big, thick soles for the boots, but I honestly don't know how they could have short of molding new feet. It's interesting that the live-action Cad Bane molds are somehow less detailed than the animated ones. He's still wearing his metal gauntlets, in silver instead of blue, so those kind of feel like manacles he snapped when he was brought to life. Whatever that thing is hanging below his shirt pocket doesn't get painted, but the bullets and buckle on his belt surprisingly do. How about that!
We don't get Bane's blasters with this toy, so his holsters will forever be empty. His accessory is still on-brand for the line, though: it's an electrostaff from one of General Grievous' Magnaguards, complete
with the removable jolts of electricity crackling around the ends! That's a brilliant inclusion for a Star Wars version of Frankenstein's monster, because it looks like some piece of lab equipment he grabbed off the wall and started swinging around. When the Magnaguard came with this accessory, it was unpainted gray with pink lightning; for this release, the handle is grey and the tips are gold, while the electricity is done in blue. Nice updates!
This version of Cad Bane was really nicely articulated, it turns out. He has swivel/hinge ankles, swivel boots, swivel/hinge knees, balljoint hips, a balljoint waist, swivel/hinge wrists, swivel/hinge elbows, swivel/hinge shoulders, pectoral hinges, a balljointed neck, and a barbell head. The coat limits the legs a bit, of course, and so do the holsters. Even being molded from flexible PVC can only do so much, ya know? But it's not like the traditional pop cultural interpretation of Frankenstein is a dynamic kung-fu fighter, so this is fine. It's also hard to ignore that he's got his trigger fingers extended when he doesn't include any guns.
All the Black Series Holiday Edition figures come with a pack-in, to help up the value. Sadly, the Duros Bounty Hunter doesn't get anything as cool as the Inquisitor's mynock: in fact, his little buddy has been used in this line before. We've got our second seasonal Babu Frick.
Unfortunately, because this set was (supposedly) released in 2024,
that means it was in production too early to use either of the new Anzellan molds included with IG-12. Babu doesn't have any specific Halloween theme, just suitable colors: green skin, a purple shirt, brown hood, and black belt. Is he a zombie? A baby Frankenstein? A stand-in for Igor? He's whatever you want to decide he is. The figure has swivel waist, balljointed shoulders, and the visor on his hood is hinged so it can drop down over his eyes, which is a lot of movement for a 1" tall toy.
I really do enjoy the Black Series Holiday Edition figures, and if I'd known this set existed, I would have gotten it right away. Of course, being ignorant worked out in my favor this time, because I ended up getting it for less than $20 when it finally popped up on my recommendations. And yet I'm still glad the 2025 Halloween figures are more prominent.
