Cyclops

X-Men Legends
by yo go re

How many takes until they get it right?

A leader of the X-Men, Cyclops becomes a founder of a new team called X-Factor after being reunited with Jean Grey.

Yes, and he 100% abandonned his wife and infant son to do so - our hero, ladies and gentlemen! Scott Summers is like the poster boy for "always follows the rules," but only because nobody actually pays attention to the things he does. Madelyne Pryor wasn't even the first woman he left like that! Afer Jean Grey died but before meeting Maddy, he was hooking up with a woman named Lee Forrester. They got close, but as soon as he laid eyes on Jean Grey's doppelganger he never mentioned her again. Madelyne, girl, listen: if a boy is willing to cheat on someone to get with you, he's willing to cheat on you to get with the next girl, no question. That goes for everybody.

This may be X-Factor Cyclops, but it's not "X-Factor" Cyclops. In X-Factor (the comicbook) "X-Factor" (the team) was known to the public as a group of human mutant-hunters; the idea was that, by posing as an anti-mutant agency, anyone who saw a mutant and was scared by them would call to report it, then the team could show up and take the mutant to safety. Like if the Ghostbusters were secretly pro-ghost. Anyway, when they were in their matching powder blue jumpsuits, they were X-Factor; when they put on the costumes like this, they were the X-Terminators.

X-Tapolapocetl Cyclops does not use the body all the previous Cykes have used, sadly. It's that new one, with the not-great proportions. The large yellow X that forms his costume is painted on, not sculpted, so there's nothing special there, either. In addition to the pair of fists, he has a relaxed right hand and a left hand with two figures out to adjust his visor. It makes sense Hasbro would choose this costume for the figure, because they already made the other one (with the white X) as part of the Retro Collection line. How about that! A company not double-dipping for a change!

The figure includes two heads, and they're both pretty great. The first is a plain, standard look, though it is distinguished by having a slight smirk on the lips. He's not really the "smirking" type, at least not during this time in the books, so it's a little unusual. The second head has the mouth open in a shout, and the visor is a slot where the accessories can plug in.

Giving Cyclops energy beams that can fit into his head as a play feature is something we actually asked for 20 years ago, with the original Marvel Legends Cyclops (from ToyBiz), and it's just as fun as we imagined it to be. This time the beam is in two pieces: a straight line shooting out of the eyes, and then a massive, spilling flare where it's hitting its target. They plug together to form the full look, just like the end plugs into his visor socket. Heck, balance him on it like that desert scene in X-Men '97, if you want! You can use the straight part by itself if you feel like, but this is really cool when it's together. It's noce that they're not just cycling through the same few pieces every time.

We also get the right arm of the "Nemesis" (wink wink) Build-A-Figure. That's the one with the hose and the big gun, not the hand.

Hasbro's already announced the Jean Grey that goes with this Cyclops, as a Target exclusive, and you know they need to find ways to reuse those recent Angel wings, so he's probably on the way soon too. By himself, right now, this Cyclops is a boring figure that's being carried by the BAF piece. But once some teammates join him, he'll be better.
