Cammy

Street Fighter
by yo go re

To quote The Canterbury Tales, "This wenche thikke."

Country of Origin: England
Fighting Style: Shadaloo fighting techniques

Well that's a bit of a red flag, isn't it? Why would someone who's supposed to be one of the good guys be versed in a villain group's fighting style? The Super Street Fighter II manual explained that she was found suffering total memory loss near a British military installation. Taken in by British Intelligence, Cammy underwent Special Forces training and quickly rose to the head of the class. Now working undercover in the World Warrior tournament, Cammy is about to learn the truth about her startling past. It really suggests Capcom had an idea of where her story was going right from the start, doesn't it? But if she had total amnesia, how do they know she was born in 1974?

I didn't get SOTA's Cammy - the regular one, that is - because I had the Comic-Con International Cannon Spike Cammy exclusive; no need for the standard release when you've already got the deluxe, yeah? So I've definitely been looking forward to Series 3's release for more reasons than just being able to finally delete my information about Dee Jay's pants.

Speaking of things that were specifically designed for symmetry, Cammy wasn't. Beyond some minor costume details, she's got that big lock of hair falling out of her hat (which could be meant to be right in the center of her forehead, if you look at it that way) as well as a scar on the left side of her jaw. That's actually sculpted here, on both heads: one calm, the other yelling angrily. You know, the usual.

Comparing this Cammy toy to the one from 20 years ago, it's apparent how much "cartoonier" Jada's figures are than SOTA's were. That does make sense, though: SOTA was basically doing a "greatest hits" version of the characters, based on the art of Udon Comics, while Jada is specifically aiming for the Street Fighter II sprites. Her legs are more shapely today, and though she's got bigger glutes, she's sculpted with less of a wedgie (front or back). The red emblem on her jumper and the yellow one on her beret are sculpted elements, not just painted, and of course she's got her big armored gloves. According to the Street Fighter x Tekken artbook, those are based on the gear worn by Deunan in Masamune Shirow's Appleseed. The same source tells us her braids were inspired by the assassin Misty in bonkers '80s manga Wounded Man. Which is kind of like willingly admitting the cool animal sidekick in your critically acclaimed new game is based on something you once saw a furry artist draw.

Since Cammy is British, it makes sense she's got incredibly pale skin. That contrasts really well against the dark green of her leotard, and the bright red of her hat, bracers, and the socks peeking out of the top of her boots. The camo paint on her legs is applied crisply, same as every other transition between colors. They even thought to give a faint pink paint app to her scar, not enough to stand out instantly, but just enough to make it look different than the skin around it.

Cammy has just as much articulation as any other figure in this line: barbell head, balljointed neck, swivel/hinge shoulders, swivel biceps, double-hinged elbows, swivel/hinged wrists, a balljointed chest, balljoint waist, balljoint hips, swivel thighs, double-hinged knees, swivel shins, and swivel/hinge ankles. Plus, she gets swivels on her pigtails, so you can pose those. The ones on the calm head hang down close to her body, while the angrier head has them floating away, to make her look more dynamic. Of course, they're molded from PVC and pop off the peg pretty easily, so you could mix and match if you felt like it. That's all better than SOTA did back in the day, even if it's not quite as good as the Stinging Crane Ranger.

You get your choice of closed fists or flat chops for her hands, as well as a translucent yellow effect piece. It's a twirling bundle of energy, shaped to fit over her foot, so presumably it's supposed to suggest her Cannon Drill kick (which only had a small impact flash in SFII, but has gotten more ornate in later games), but if that's the case it should cover both feet, not just one. There is a hole for one of Jada's display stands in the effect piece, but this toy doesn't include one. Since the Cannon Drill usually slides her along the ground to strike at her opponent's ankles, it's not the worst exclusion, but we'd still rather have one.

The Street Fighter toys have recently begun to show up at Walmart, which is good... except they're not moving, because it's Series 1 and everybody who wanted those got them a year ago, so that's not really going to do Jada any favors. It would have been better if they'd picked up now with Series 3, then gone back to Series 1 and 2 if demand was there. Or maybe ordered mixed cases or something. As it is, I'm worried this will only make Walmart's buyers reluctant to take a chance on Jada again in the future. And that's a shame, because Cammy's a great little action figure and you deserve to be able to buy her.

Fair's fair: do you think the blokes in Delta Red should have to wear the same thing as little Cammy? Tell us on our message board, the Loafing Lounge.
