OAFEnet Email Update for Thursday, July 16

The OAFEnet Email Update was originally broadcast from Apollo 11.

  • Honestly, who actually remembers anything that happened in "Rise of the Machines"? Getting a quick reminder is nice. Well, as nice as getting a reminder of "Terminator 3" CAN be. One of the (many) advantages "The Sarah Connor Chronicles" had over "T4" was that it, like audiences, pretended "T3" never happened...
  • JOE FRIDAY! Since her hair is a separate piece, her skin is bare plastic rather than painted as Scarlett's was (her whole head piece is actually the colour of her hair underneath), and it's of the wildly shiny variety - it reacts badly to photographic flashes, but even to the naked eye it's a poor look. Adding insult, the skin paint on her neck...
  • All of the clone troopers look absolutely identical (literally, since they're all the same CGI model). Well THAT ain't gonna sell many toys, so the moment the dust had settled on Geonosis, the Republic and Hasbro set about creating more variations of clone than there are colours of lipstick. And when you're so stuck for extra names that you're calling...
  • The variant ShadowHawk is black all over, with thin silver lines mimicking the outline of the original costume. It's a sharp redesign, and it's duplicated here well. Again, none of the elements are sculpted, just painted on, but at least this version doesn't have the E-Z Lose Armor on his shoulders. He's got all the same articulation and even...
  • This series is based on "The Search for Kryptonite," which is why that bio's more about the story than Livewire herself (or Live Wire, according to the packaging, but wikipedia says that's some guy from the Legion of Super-Heroes called Garth, and I sure didn't buy THAT). To fill in the blanks, Livewire used to be Leslie Willis, a shock jock (gettit?)...
  • MARVEL MONDAY! Part of the fun of any movie-based toyline is watching the fans react like they've never seen a movie-based toyline ever in their lives. "Mattel's making a Deathstroke in the 'Dark Knight' line? OMG, Deathstroke must be in 'Dark Knight'!" No, you pinhead, that's just a filler figure, designed to pad the line. Sometimes, though...
  • TRANSFORMERS TUESDAY! The toy isn't a licensed reproduction (no credit to Mack on the packaging), so the small details of the vehicle don't quite match up with the real thing, but no one's really going to complain about that. It is a bit sad that his hood ornament is just a plain, unpainted wedge, but overall the mixer looks quite good...
  • Plaster of Paris is in fact an eccentric assassin with a thing for belly dancing, and is the other half of "The Spirit's" action figure amazon brigade, along with Jakita Wagner's less interesting sister Sand Saref. This version, the natural colours one, is available solo; there's also a boxed set of her and Sand together, both recoloured in monochrome...
  • The "Prince Caspian" toys are made by Play Along toys, the folks who used to have that mysterious connection to Art Asylum and are now a part of Jakks Pacific. Asterius' sculpt is okay, but between DC Direct and the Four Horsemen, we've seen better. Of course, both of those were specialty toys, not mass-market, so you have to cut this one a little slack...
