The OAFEnet Email Update is recovering from its bout of the nerdflu.
- JOE FRIDAY! Hawk was one of the original 13 Joes, released in 1982. Of course, he was only available as a pack-in with the Mobile Missile System, so he was a rare find even among that already tough-to-find crew. That's why the cartoon chose to promote Duke, instead - he was a new figure at the time, so putting him on the show would help drive sales...
- Putting Gowron and Worf together makes a lot of sense, though - much as Gowron wouldn't have liked to admit it, Worf is pretty much the king-maker of the Klingon Empire, having murdered Duras to put Gowron on the throne, supported him (despite various stints of discommodation, which is sort of a biannual tradition for Worf) through various wars...
- Best to tell you this right away: we weren't originally planning to review this figure. But when we mentioned him in the Han Solo (Stormtrooper Disguise) review, a lot of people seemed surprised that Luke even existed. Well of course he exists! Did you really think Hasbro was going to pass up on the opportunity to put ANOTHER Luke into a new assortment...
- Machiko is still mostly naked, so Hot Toys have had to grapple with the usual problem of 1:6 scale dolls showing off their midriffs - how to hide those unsightly torso joints? The Hot Angel body puts its faith in a rubber "skin" which covers her body like a vest, providing an unbroken physique from neck to waist (including such minor details...
- MARVEL MONDAY! I don't care how you spin it, DD's enhanced senses would not allow him to survive a dive from a rooftop to the street. It doesn't matter how well you can hear, gravity still works the same way. I can buy that the improved sense of touch could provide better balance, and would thus KEEP him from falling, but once he's in the wind...
- TRANSFORMERS TUESDAY! The figure is mostly a light baby blue, just like the G1 Hot Spot was, with black limbs, silver panels, and a few red accents to spice things up. His head is black with yellow eyes, and there's an inset panel in the faceplate that's been painted silver. From a distance, it looks like a big toothy grimace. He's smiling at us...
- "Soldiers," huh? Looks like someone's worried about copping PR flak for making toys of Nazis. Mind you they're also carefully skirting how the "mighty mechanic" gets torn to pieces by the propeller, but that's an Indy film for you - fine for kids, but terrible for squeamish over-protective parents worrying about kids...
- This bad boy was sculpted by Mike Locasio and Jason Frailey, but the package doesn't bother to break down who did what. I like to imagine that Mike did the right half of the figure, Jason did the left half, and then they crossed their fingers that everything would line up properly when they put them together. That's probably not even close to what happened...
