OAFEnet Email Update for Thursday, February 25

It's time for the OAFEnet Email Update!

  • JOE FRIDAY! Copperhead is armed with a M249 SAW (paratrooper version) that mounts on a tripod and has a removable ammo belt. An appropriate choice, since he uses Roadblock's arms, and this was originally Roadblock's gun. There's also a black version of the Viper's rifle, which isn't quite as exotic, but isn't unwelcome. He's got a nice knife... (...more)
  • As a kid, I had a few of the cool Bandai vinyl Godzillas, but I missed out on the Mechagodzilla. Maybe it never even showed up at the Japanese toy import store in Waltham, I don't know. So I had to use a stand-in - usually Grimlock. It wasn't until 2002 that I finally got a vinyl Mechagodzilla. But he was quickly superseded by an even cooler toy... (...more)
  • It's not that Bats' armor is a particularly cool design or anything - none of the heroes' new little suits were. It's just a black suit with a few typically "Alex Rossish" embellishments. Other than head, which has a vague analogue to Bruce's bat-ears in the form of a scalloped plate that runs around the back of the helmet, there's nothing especially... (...more)
  • MOTU MONDAY! While his original packaging described him as an "Evil Cosmic Enforcer," most of the 1980s MOTU fiction established Zodac as a "neutral" character, someone who observed the battle between good and evil from a cosmic perspective. What exactly Zodac's role in these events was a lot less clear. There seem to be a few different types... (...more)
  • MARVEL MONDAY! At the end of 2009, online retailer Action Figure Xpress offered two exclusive box sets, both featuring the same characters: the First Appearance X-Men, and X-Factor. Since it's basically just an excuse to release the same figures twice, we'll be reviewing them in tandem. This review is the First Appearance X-Men; for X-Factor... (...more)

  • TRANSFORMERS TUESDAY! In 2004, as part of the original Universe line, imported a few sets of Micromasters. The Micromasters were Transformers who downsized their bodies to be more fuel efficient. But since that left them severely out-classed in a fight with even the Minibots (like Bumblebee), eventually they introduced some combiners to up their ante... (...more)
  • I must confess, and please don't pelt me with stones of translucent green willpower, but I'm coming to this party pretty late. Like any rational fanboy, I've always liked Green Lantern, but the characters where never that compelling for me and certainly there was NEVER any story that lived up to the concept of a structured intergalactic police force... (...more)
  • WWEDNESDAY! This isn't the first Jakks Goldberg figure, and amazingly, it wouldn't be the last - this figure comes from Classic Superstars series 25, and there was another released in Series 27. That seems a bit rushed, doesn't it? Especially since the guy wore the same basic outfit during his entire career: black boots, black gloves, black trunks... (...more)
  • Mezco's "20,000 Leagues" line comprised only two figures, and was released in 2001. Instead of your normal blister card packaging, the toys were sold in wonderfully designed window boxes meant to mimic submarine construction. However, rather than a straight-sided rectangle, the box - measuring 13" wide, 14" tall and 5" deep - is a remarkably... (...more)
