52 Countdown

yo sez:

So with today's review of DC Direct's 52 Isis action figure, we've finally finished up that whole series. If you've read the reviews, you know that there was a whole lot of story that took place over that missing year. If you didn't buy the issues as they came out, how can you ever hope to catch up?

You can do what I did, and hit up one of the sites online that did a good job of recapping and breaking down each issue, letting you in on all those references and clues you may have missed.

  • My favorite? Andrew Dowdell's 52 Pickup at Silver Bullet Comics. That guy was right on top of everything, and made some really sharp guesses, too.
  • After that, it was Wizard's 52 Roundup, which had a crappy name and less impressive writing, but gained a few points by sheer virtue of having images of each issue's stand-out panels. Wizard also had a weekly blog from 52 cover artist JG Jones, in which he discussed the creative process and everything that went into each image.
  • And finally, Comicbook Resources hosted Justin Eger's The 52 Steps. Not a bad series, but really hurt by the fact that it doesn't have a single "index" page for the whole thing - that link takes you to the article about Week Fifty-Two, the only page with links to all the other issues. Bad form. However, they do seem to be the only place anywhere online that actually has pictures of the books' covers, rather than just the books' cover art.

So that takes care of 52, but what about the followup series, Countdown? That one's just started, so you can still get in on the ground floor. Silver Bullet has Dowdell back again for Countdown Counseling, and Wizard has its own Countdown Catch-All - both of those follow the standards of the 52 articles, with good writing and purty pikchures, respectively. Does CBR have a feature on Countdown? Who the hell can say? Any link wouldn't be useful until the final week, anyway...
