Soon Forget: Playmates Mirage TMNT

This is the latest in a series (of indefinite length and regularity) of blog posts memorializing cancelled toys. Our figures today are Playmates Toys' comic-style Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

The boys were first previewed last year in a sidebar to a Nintendo Power article about the upcoming TMNT Smash-Up videogame, and were then officially announced a week or so later. The plan was to have all four turtles, Splinter, plus Shredder and a Foot Soldier. Not even NECA has announced a comic-style Splinter yet!

Unfortunately, a spokesman for Playmates has confirmed that they have decided not to go ahead with the line. The Heroes in a Half-Shell are in a bit of a decline right now - their cartoon just ended a few months ago, and while there's a finale movie airing this weekend, that's pretty much it for them for the foreseeable future. So with no outside tie-ins, Playmates probably expects the toyline to cool off, and are scaling back what they plan to do with it in the future.

This is a sad way to spend their 25th Anniversary year.
