Godzilla Mystery Minis - Destoroyah review

Funko Friday

Here's a possibly-tepid take for you: Shin Godzilla is not actually a modern take on Godzilla; he's Destoroyah.

Both were evolved from prehistoric microorganisms due to something dumped into Tokyo Bay decades in the past (radioactive waste for Godzilla, the original 1954 Oxygen Destroyer weapon for Destroyah), both go through multiple metamorphoses during their film, both are more red/black than green, and both fire purple energy. Shin Godzilla even uses the sound of Destoroyah's Micro-Oxygen Beam for SG's focused ultimate attack!

Godzilla vs. Destoroyah was the final film of the Heisei Era, with the plan being to kill Godzilla off to leave room for the sure-to-be-successful 1998 American Godzilla. Oops! Destoroyah is one of the most evil of Godzilla's foes, seemingly reveling in the destruction he causes instead of being unaware of it. This Mystery Mini represents his Perfect Form, and is the biggest Mini in the line. He's got a very Godzilla-like stance, but the toy has much more red color than the black of the film. The claws on his ankles are sculpted, but don't get any paint; thankfully, the ones on the feet and hands are painted, as are the ones on the knees and around the mouth. The wings on Destoroyah's head were inspired by Go Nagai's Devilman (certainly not the only character to claim that lineage), and in the original script he would have fired a beam from that carbuncle on his chest that would have been powerful enough to blast pieces off Godzilla! His wings are folded behind him, because how else are you going to fit them in the box?

Destoroyah was the only original kaiju of the Heisei Era films - everyone else Godzilla fought was either a returning monster, or some kind of clone of Godzilla himself. Even if he wasn't, being the foe who got the kill on big daddy G would have propelled him to notoriety on its own. The Destroyah Mystery Mini is available in a 1:36 ratio, or one in every three cases. It would be better if Funko had chosen a darker color for those brick red armor plates, but this is still a cool representation.
