Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Dirtbag & Ground Chuck

You've seen their modern updates, but now let's take a quick look at the sensational character finds of 1991, Dirtbag and Groundchuck!

Put your ear to the ground and listen for Dirtbag, the militant mutant mole man. He's a crazy coal miner and a mad mole all rolled into one. Dirtbag tunnels through sewers like a chisel through cheese. This mole mutant's main mission is to seek out and destroy his arch enemy, Splinter. And sewer searchin' couldn't be easier with Dirtbag's gear: a rancid rat pack, chisel knife. The sewers are sure to crumble under the weight of Dirtbag's jack hammer gun - the deadliest pneumatic tool in the world! And Splinter better stop snoozin' in his meditation chamber, 'cause Dirtbag's got a mind-numbing 4-pointed pick. Nothing can stop this tunneling terror - not walls, not boulder - maybe not even the Turtles! So listen hard and listen long, for the next sound you hear could be Splinter splintering!

He didn't have any suspenders, but his shirt still had straps like overalls; looking at the original design, it's possible his pants and shirt were meant to be the same color, with this green/black duo decided by whoever did the paint masters for Playmates, but then why is he wearing a belt? The dark marks on his shirt are theoretically meant to be dirt smeared on him, but it looks like camo print. He has buck teeth, which isn't something moles have, but maybe the man he was before did. The cloth tied around his tail isn't painted, like it was on the cartoon figure, but this old one gets a heart tattoo on his arm the newer one didn't. His accessories are a Chisel Knife ("A wedge and a weapon in one!"), Jack Hammer Gun ("Hammers more than just people named Jack!"), Rat Pack ("For burrowing bad boys on the go!", and 4-Pointed Pick ("To make your point - four times!"), all molded in hot pink, explaining where that color came from in the cartoon. The backpack has great details, like a shovel sticking through it or a mousetrap hanging from the side, and there's a slot where the pickaxe can slot through for storage. On his left arm, it's the elbow that's articulated; on the right arm, it's the wrist.

Free bonus fact: in getting these figures out to review, I learned that I've had Dirtbag's backpack on upside down for 35 years: I had the shovel pointing down instead of up. Because I was a dumb kid, I guess?

  2. Groundchuck is the fursona of Dennis Rodman.

  3. My Common Sense is Tingling says:

Dirtbag in the commercial looks like he's wearing a belt, that's where the suspenders come from.
