A while back, sculptor Paul Harding began a series of digital sculpts featuring Marvel characters the way they looked a half century ago. It was just for fun, but fans reacted well, and when Hasbro came to him to create some new head sculpts for Marvel Legends, it just made sense to turn those designs he'd spent so much time and effort on into plastic.
