The bones of history

The Power Rangers X Cobra Kai Skeleputty may not have had any specific story connected with him, but that's not to say he doesn't have any history.

In the second episode of the series, the Rangers fought a monster named Bones (or "Dora Skelton" in Japanese). Rather than the usual Putty Patrollers, he had his own unique minions. They were called Skeleton Warriors in Zyuranger, and basically dressed like the bullies in Karate Kid: skintight black suits with white bones on them. They had skull masks, rather than normal Putty faces like this one, but it's definitely a similar look.

A more direct parallel can be found in Season 2's "Zedd's Monster Mash." Per Henshin Grid, that episode featured the White Ranger being forced to re-fight some of the fiercest monsters by himself in monster hell. In addition to resurrected threats like Pumpkin Rapper, a deleted scene would also have seen Tommy being menaced by a very familiar looking group of cannon-fodder:

These Putties wore black jumpsuits with white bones, but also had the standard Putty faces. They're not identical to the Skeleputty toy, because (being created by Lord Zedd) they also had the Z vests and kneepads.

Still, that means the figure in today's review is almost a real thing from the show, and thus has more value than simply being an interesting toy design.
