Cryptkins: Chupacabra review

Welp, like the song says: Chupacabra's chewin' up cattle down in Mexico"!

Mini-Figure Mini-Reviews

He may be fiercely green and have spikes running along his head and back, but he just wants to be your friend! Don't believe those rumors about him drinking blood of livestock... but keep him away from farms - and goats, especially goats - just in case!

You know when we recently joked that axolotls were invented in the 2010s? That's not as farfetched as it seems, because the Chupacabra didn't exist before 1995. Seems like those myths should be older, right? Nope, the very concept of chupacaabras is newer than the movie Species. Which we can say for sure, because Madelyne Tolentino, the woman who made up the weird half-lizard monsters with spikes coming out of them, admitted to having seen Species a few weeks before "witnessing" the creature for the first time. HMMMMM! In an effort to make the Cryptkin chupacabra cuter, they've given it little tufts of fur on its cheeks, which doesn't really fit the usual description of them - though the weird underbite fangs and the ridge of spikes down the scalp and back definitely do.

Bagged separately inside the box with each figure is a small card with art of the Cryptkin on one side and biographical facts (well, "facts") on the other: name, full-grown height/weight, descriptions, diet, and habitat and range, with a map of the world to help drive that last one home. El Chupo purports to be from North, Central, and South America and the Caribbean, which seems like an over-reach: do the stories of them really go all the way down into Argentina and Chile? All the Cryptkins minifigures are positioned sitting (if that's something their anatomy allows for), while the card art shows him standing in a desert at night. The toy is two-tone green, with gray teeth and claws, yellow spikes, and the series' trademark big red eyes.

A standard release in Series 1, Choopy is one of the rare Cryptkins to not have any repaints or alternate remoldings, even as a store exclusive - it's just this little green cutie by himself, and that's it.
