This is the latest in a series (of indefinite length and regularity) of blog posts memorializing cancelled toys. Our subject today is NECA's Gargoyles line.
There's been no announcement about the future of this line, but we were last promised an update by the time of SDCC 2024. That didn't happen, and there was nothing shown at last month's Toy Fair, so it seems Detective Broadway will be the final figure, and there will be at least three that go unreleased.
Coldstone, the gestalt entity created by Xanatos merging technology together with several smashed Gargoyles, was announced in August of 2022.
If you look by his feet, you can make out several of his planned accessories: a laser blast, a growling head, and a skull with a candle on it.
To celebrate Gargoyles' anniversary, NECA teased their next figure in October of 2022, but Macbeth wasn't officially revealed until September of the next year.
The king of Scotland and father of the king hereafter was sculpted by Djordje Djokovic, who said "Macbeth's first variant head was meant as [...] foreshadowing of what's to come in this line," meaning in addition to the figures shown here, we're also apparently losing out on The Hunters. No idea if any sculpting work was ever done on those, but they haven't been shown or otherwise mentioned.
Born on the mythical isle of Avalon, Gabriel is a biological son of Othello and Coldfire. He is Angela's rookery brother and best friend, who later becomes the leader of the Avalon Clan.
Another Djordje sculpt, Gabriel would have come with a flaming torch (the same one seen in the art on Angela's box, linking the two characters) as well as a baby version of himself. The plan was all the Avalon Gargoyles would have come with infants that way, hinting at even more figures that will never be made.
The Gargoyles line was fun, and the figures sold quickly whenever NECA's stock people would ever bother shelving them, but apparently that wasn't enough. We can hold out hope that these figures may eventually see release, but it seems unlikely.
I'm surprised they never made stone repaints.
It's such an easy layup of an idea!
Glad I was finally able to find Eliza for non scalper prices. Now i just gotta decide if I want the Detective Broadway and Pheonix Gate 2pack if nothing else is coming...
